Pharmacology

Spirulina is a natural nutritional supplement that is enriched with proteins, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids like gamma linolenic acid. It is called a wonderful gift or wonder food of the earth. Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) belongs to genus phylum cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are classified as either blue-green algae or as blue-green bacteria.

Spirulina or its active constituent, C-phycocyanin is promising in chemoprevention, neuroprotection, antiviral action, cardiovascular protection, hepatoprotection, anti-inflammatory action, antioxidant action and protection against chemical- and drug-induced toxicities.
 

Dosage & Administration

2 to 4 capsules daily or as advised by the physician.

Interaction

There are no reports suggesting that spirulina interacts with any conventional medication.

Contraindications

Spirulina is contraindicated in those who are hypersensitive to any component of this product.
 

Side Effects

Spirulina is generally well tolerated. Occasional diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea have been reported. Also there are few reports of allergic reactions to spirulina containing supplements.
