Generally if you want a refill for your pen look for a branded refill that matches your pen and type. If you can't find a branded refill this is usually because the manufacturer does not make specialised refills and your pen will take the International Standard for that writing type.
When replacing the refill, rotate the metal nib clockwise to remove it, pull out the spring, and pull out the used refill. Insert a new refill, replace the spring, and close the pen tip by turning the nip counterclockwise. Below is how the ink refill looks after taking it out of the packaging.
How long does a ballpoint refill last?
A rollerball refill will last an average of 30 legal size pages. A ballpoint refill will last an average of 300 legal-size pages.
The bottom line is, there are lots of good reasons to refill your favourite pens instead of replacing them. And look at it this way…if you take a couple of extra minutes to buy refills instead of replacements when your pens run dry, you will eventually save enough money to buy yourself a nice, expensive new pen.
Most fountain pens hold between 0.7 and 2.5ml of ink. The total ink capacity largely depends on the type of filling mechanism: cartridge pens hold either 0.7ml or 1.2-1.5ml (short and long cartridges); piston-filler pens hold on average 1.2ml of ink; eyedropper pens hold on average 2.5ml of ink.
While ink can go bad, it rarely does. Ink is a solution consisting of water, dyes (or pigments), lubricants, surfactants, and biocides. So long as all these parts do their job and stay in suspension, chances are in the ink will be just fine.
You will get the most, best use out of ballpoint or rollerball refills because they will last four years. Fineliner pen refills can last anywhere from two to four years. A document marker refill will last around two years as well as the small ballpoint refills.
If you use the pen frequently, the ink should last around a week. However, if you only use it sometimes, it will last around 6 months to a year at most. We recommend that you replace your ink cartridge every 6 months, as ink cartridges lose their quality between 6 and 9 months.
