A digital pen is a writing instrument that allows the user to save a handwritten note as an image file.
A digital pen is a battery-operated writing instrument that allows the user to digitally capture a handwritten note or drawing. Typically, a digital pen comes with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cradle to let the user upload the handwritten notes to a personal computer (PC).
Digital pens have many advantages over traditional pens, enabling users to easily record their text entry, drawings, diagrams, quick notes and transfer them to a computer where they can be used either as-is or used in many different ways in enhancing workflow, simplify work procedures and more.
A smart pen is generally larger and has more features than an active pen. Digital pens typically contain internal electronics and have features such as touch sensitivity, input buttons, memory for storing handwriting data and transmission capabilities.
A stylus is generally smaller and much thinner than a digital pen because it contains no internal electronics. Many digital pens do more than just write or draw; they often have built-in capabilities to record audio as well.
